Job Description:
Company: Chickmont Foods Ltd.Job Summary: Depending on the area
and complexity of the farm, farm managers are assigned the area for
management. If the size of the farm is small, the manager handles
the entire farm management and performs some labour work as well if
required. If the farm extends in a larger area, the farm manager is
responsible for maintaining only a part of the farm assigned to him
such as maintaining the livestock. However, in the event of a
crisis (such as a flu pandemic) which results in the farm becoming
short-staffed, the farm manager may be required to perform more
strenuous tasks regardless of farm size.Responsibilities:
- Cleaning of chicken houses and ensuring that the manure in each
pen is windrowed for at least 7 days.
- Walking and evaluating the physical environment of the pens
daily, and making any adjustments to improve production performance
and ensure welfare of the flocks.
- Accurately documenting and reporting daily windrow
temperatures.
- Ensuring that litter is adequately decaked and levelled prior
to placing feeding equipment.
- Purchasing farm supplies such as disinfectants, pesticides and
parts needed for repairs and ensuring that these items are
regularly restocked.
- Communicating with the Farm Operations Manager when major
repair/replacement farm related parts are needed.
- Ensuring that pens are fumigated with formaldehyde and sprayed
adequately with approved disinfectants and insecticides prior to
every batch.
- Thoroughly cleaning feed bins and water tanks before chick
placement.
- Ensuring that all biosecurity rules as stipulated in the
company's operating procedures are upheld at all times. The wheel
dip at the farm's entrance must always be filled with an approved
disinfectant and a food dip containing disinfectant must be placed
at each entrance to every pen.
- Washing/dry cleaning of feeding equipment/water lines prior to
the subsequent batch.
- Arranging the repair and maintenance of field equipment and
farm buildings.
- Ensuring that grass/bush around the farm grounds are cut
regularly and maintained at a satisfactory level.
- Arming of intruder detection systems before leaving the farm at
the end of each day.
- Cleaning water lines thoroughly with citric acid and chlorine
prior to chick placement. Citric acid must be held in the lines for
at least 72 hours. Once this holding period has expired, the
acidified water must be flushed out and the system then replenished
with freshwater. Chlorine must then be administered and left in the
lines until the day before placement.
- Ensuring that no more than a 50:1 birds/pan ratio is maintained
throughout the flock.
- Ensuring that pen setup prior to placement is as follows: chick
trays must be evenly distributed throughout the pen at no more than
a 100:1 birds/pan ratio with at least four (4) lines of chick paper
laid out to supplement the trays. Turbos must also be placed at no
more than a 100:1 birds/pan ratio.
- Ensuring that ammonia emissions are maintained at a low
level.
- Ordering and receiving of feed and propane gas (All feed
deliveries must be accepted by the lead farm manager only once on
duty.)
- Setting alarms and ensuring they are answered in a timely
manner.
- Ensuring that flocks in each pen are given the below feed types
and feed forms for the specified ages and feeding amounts per
company guidelines.
- Ensuring that when switching flocks from one feed type/form to
another that the different feeds are melded for at least two days.
The farm manager must also administer citric acid to the flock
before the transition period.
- Assessing physical feed quality for each delivery using a
shaker sieve and returning the feed to the mill if required
specifications are not met.
- Handling paperwork and keeping detailed records of flock
weights, mortalities, feed stock etc, and recording this
information in Excel Spreadsheets.
- Ensuring that pens are fed in advance before chick
placement.
- Ensuring that the seal number on the hatchery delivery truck
matches that listed on the delivery bill upon chick arrival. The
number of chick crates received must also match the number listed
on the bill. Any discrepancies must be reported to the hatchery
manager immediately before offloading.
- Ensuring that chickens are treated in a humane manner at all
times.
- Ensuring that chickens are receiving feed and water ad
lib.
- Flushing of pens at least once daily for the first week once
the flock has placed.
- Monitoring and analysing environmental conditions in poultry
houses multiple times daily using computer based software. The farm
manager utilises this data to make any necessary adjustments to
environmental settings in order to maximise bird comfort.
- Conducting test pen research and analysing test pen data in
order to assess flock performance.
- Removing feed from the poultry house in the event that the
quality of the feed is unsatisfactory.
- Placing of the two outer automatic feeder lines once the flock
reaches a bodyweight of 90 grams and the two inner lines when the
flock reaches 130 grams. All chick trays must be removed once the
first two feeder lines are placed and all turbos removed when the
last two lines are placed.
- Dosing flocks with citric acid at least twice weekly once they
have surpassed 2 weeks of age.
- Recruiting, training and supervising farm employees.
- Ensuring all staff adhere to health and safety
regulations.
- Administering Vitamins/Probiotic packs to the birds when flock
performance is unsatisfactory.
- Ensuring that water used for vaccination is held for 3 days
prior to vaccination. This is to ensure that its chlorine content
is reduced to a level that would not deactivate the vaccine.
- Administering Bursal vaccine via the water lines to flocks at
the ages of 7-8 days and once again at 14-15 days. Newcastle
vaccine is to be administered only at 14-15 days of age.
Vaccination mustn't occur any later than the ages specified.
- Ensuring proper ventilation.
- Ensuring that all cooling pad systems are thoroughly cleaned
every batch and functioning efficiently before the flock reaches 3
weeks old.
- Removing dead or sick birds twice daily.
- Monitoring flock behaviour to detect any signs of illness,
including liaising with veterinarians.
- Removing caked litter from the pens as necessary throughout the
rearing period.
- Maintaining facilities in good working order.
- Dosing of citric acid to the flock prior to fowl catching.
- Raising of automatic feeder lines and water lines prior to fowl
catching.
- Ensuring that birds are withdrawn from feed for 4-8 hours prior
to delivery to the processing plant. This ensures that the contents
of the birds' intestines are purged and do not contaminate the
processing plant.
- Overseeing the catching of birds and ensuring that they are
caught in a humane manner.
- Monitoring the entire production activities, making sure that
the actual production is in accordance with production goals set
and identifying and correcting the field production issue if the
actual production is not in accordance with production goals.People
Management:
- You will work closely with the Farm Operations Manager (FOM) to
increase productivity and profitability within the operations.
- Actively participate in the recruitment process for team
members by identifying staffing needs and shorting potential
candidates by utilising the company's HRIS (BambooHR) or any other
suitable resource.
- Analyzes the workforce requirements and subsequently liaise
with the FOM and HR team members to ensure that the Farm staffing
requirements are requested in a timely manner to support
operational needs.
- Identifies candidates that are not performing to the expected
standards of the company and recommend what steps should be taken,
up to and including dismissal, if deemed necessary.
- Manages the performance management process within the
department by providing continuous and constructive feedback,
keeping communication lines open, providing clarification of
expectations and identifying areas for improvement.
- To ensure that department goals are clear and in alignment with
company objectives.
- Able to access and identify department conflicts and
infractions against company policies / procedures, and understands
how, when and what form of disciplinary action should be
taken.
- Plan and execute frequent team building activities, in an
effort to maintain the momentum and productivity of all staff
within the department.Training and Development:
- In conjunction with the Farm Operations Manager, recommends all
aspects of Training and Development and Talent Management to
maximise team members potential to Training and Culture Development
team initiatives and to agreed HACCP Standards.
- Ensure that on the job training is conducted for new and
existing staff.
- Identifies and conducts assessments to determine what training
needs are required for the Team Members and staff within the
department to increase job knowledge.
- Actively coaches the team member's potential and growth, helps
them to develop new skills and to aid in promoting individual
responsibility.
- Recommends and assists with the creation and implementation of
training plans, based on team members gaps and needs.
- Conduct annual performance appraisals for staff, ensuring that
the process is fair, free of biases, accurate, and promotes the
overall purpose of the performance management system as guided by
Farm Operations Manager.
- Liaise with the Human Resources - Training and Culture
Development team to support the department's development objectives
and ensure staff are equipped with the necessary tools and
materials to effectively execute their daily tasks.Skills and

desirable.General Job Requirements:
- Be able to work on bank holidays
- Be able to work day and night shifts
- Preferably have personal transport but we can work around this
if the successful candidate can arrive to work on time using public
transportation.
- Must be able to answer alarms, even if they occur after hours
during the night/early morning.
- Willingness to work overtime as required
- Ability to work in stressful situationsWorking Conditions:The
working condition depends mostly on the duties assigned to the farm
managers. Some farm managers have to be constantly working in a
chicken house, performing the laborious tasks including physical
labour, while some work partially from the comfort of offices and
spend lesser time in the barns when recordkeeping, procuring
parts/materials or analysing the environmental conditions of the
pens via farm related software.Farm managers are involved in
directing all the duties related to farm operations, which include
monitoring the livestock, supervising the field employees and
procuring parts for minor repairs on the farm. Along with this,
they are also involved in managing farm related expenditures and
handling the government policies related to agriculture based
programs and operations.NB: From time to time the operating
procedures will be amended.
